Location from Malazan Book of the Fallen by Steven Erikson
Genabackan city conquered by the Malazan Empire after Moon's Spawn withdrew — where the Bridgeburners were shattered and the northern campaign began in earnest.
Pale is defined by its fall. The siege broke when Moon's Spawn — Anomander Rake's floating fortress — withdrew after a devastating magical exchange that killed most of the Bridgeburner mages and left the 2nd Army gutted. The city capitulated, but the cost was staggering: Tayschrenn's betrayal of the Bridgeburners during the battle seeded a hatred that would fester for years. Now an occupied city under Malazan governance, Pale carries the atmosphere of a place that changed hands violently and hasn't forgotten. The locals are resentful, the garrison is undermanned, and the craters outside the walls serve as mass graves that no one tends.
A walled city on the Genabackan plain, its fortifications scarred by siege damage and sorcerous assault. Craters mark where Moon's Spawn rained debris during the battle. Malazan banners hang from towers that still show blast marks.
