Moon's Spawn

Location from Malazan Book of the Fallen by Steven Erikson

Floating mountain fortress of the Tiste Andii — a wounded sky-keep that drifted over Genabackis as Anomander Rake's seat of power before its final descent onto Coral.

Moon's Spawn was ancient before the Tiste Andii arrived on this world. A sky-keep from the age of the Tiste civil wars, it carried Anomander Rake and his people across the sky of Genabackis for centuries — a floating mountain that served as fortress, home, and statement of power. But the keep was dying. Each major sorcerous assault cracked it further, and the siege of Pale shattered enough of its interior that Rake was forced to withdraw rather than lose the structure entirely. The fortress carried within it the remnants of Tiste Andii civilization — libraries, gardens of Darkness-touched flora, chambers that had been inhabited for tens of thousands of years. When Rake crashed it into Coral to end the Pannion War, he destroyed the last physical home his people had known since leaving Kurald Galain. The act was simultaneously a military tactic, a sacrifice, and a farewell. Moon's Spawn's wreckage became the foundation of Black Coral — the old home literally becoming the bones of the new one.

Appearance

A massive chunk of black basalt hanging in the sky, its underside scarred with fissures glowing faintly with Kurald Galain's darkness. The fortress is kilometers across, its top surface carrying towers and structures of Tiste Andii design, but the rock itself is cracked and crumbling — visibly dying. When it moved, it blotted out the sun, casting entire cities into shadow. Its shadow was cold, carrying the chill of the warren of Darkness.
