Kharkanas

Location from Malazan Book of the Fallen by Steven Erikson

The first city — built within Kurald Galain before the Tiste shattered into three peoples, now fallen into ruin and darkness, holding the memory of everything that went wrong.

Kharkanas was the heart of Tiste civilization before the civil wars that split them into Andii, Edur, and Liosan. Built within Kurald Galain — the Warren of Darkness — the city was the seat of Mother Dark's power and the center of a culture that had achieved something close to perfection before tearing itself apart over the nature of that perfection. The prequel trilogy reveals the city in its prime: a place of art, philosophy, and political intrigue where the decisions that would shape the next three hundred thousand years were made by people who thought they were arguing about religion and were actually choosing the shape of the cosmos. The city fell when the Tiste fell — abandoned by the Andii who followed Anomander, shunned by the Edur who chose Shadow, forgotten by the Liosan who chose Light. It remains within Kurald Galain, a monument to what the Tiste were and a gravestone for what they lost.

Appearance

Vast stone architecture in absolute darkness — towers and bridges and plazas designed for a people who see without light. The city is built on a scale that suggests a civilization at its peak: grand avenues, soaring spires, amphitheaters carved from living rock. But everything is empty, abandoned, the stonework cracking under the weight of ages without maintenance. Dust fills the halls. The silence is not peaceful but grieving.
