Tiste Edur Homeland

Location from Malazan Book of the Fallen by Steven Erikson

Dark northern forests of Lether where the Tiste Edur dwelt — shadow-draped old growth where a proud people fell to the Crippled God's corruption through a cursed sword.

The Edur homeland was a place of cold pride and ancient tradition before the Crippled God's sword corrupted the Warlock King's youngest son. The Tiste Edur lived in the shadow of Kurald Emurlahn — the fractured warren of Shadow — and their society was organized around tribal hierarchies that had endured since their arrival from the Tiste homeland. Rhulad Sengar found the sword on the sea floor and died holding it, then returned to life — the first of many deaths and resurrections that drove him into the madness the Crippled God required. The homeland emptied as the Edur marched south to conquer Lether, leaving their forests to silence.

Appearance

Ancient forest so dense the canopy blocks the sun entirely. The trees are massive — trunks wider than houses, bark black with age. Villages of the Edur blend into the forest, built from living wood and shadow. The air is perpetually damp, cold, and thick with the smell of loam and moss. Light filters through in rare shafts that seem accidental, as though the forest resents illumination.
