Deadhouse

Location from Malazan Book of the Fallen by Steven Erikson

The Azath House on Malaz Island — where Kellanved and Dancer entered mortality's exit and emerged as Shadowthrone and Cotillion, gods of the Shadow Realm.

The Deadhouse is an Azath House — one of the mysterious structures that appear throughout the Malazan world, imprisoning dangerous powers beneath webs of living root. The Deadhouse on Malaz Island holds particular significance: it was the doorway through which Kellanved and Dancer shed their mortal lives and ascended to become Shadowthrone and the Patron of Assassins. The garden holds imprisoned beings of terrifying power — things the Azath judged too dangerous to remain free. The house itself seems alive, responding to threats and opportunities with a patience measured in millennia.

Appearance

A squat, ancient building at the edge of Malaz City, surrounded by a garden of gnarled roots that grip the earth like fingers. The house looks abandoned — shuttered windows, a door that no sane person approaches. The garden's roots occasionally shift, tightening around things buried beneath the soil. The air near the Deadhouse is always cold, regardless of season, and sound behaves strangely — footsteps echo wrong, conversations carry in directions they shouldn't.
