The Chain of Dogs

Location from Malazan Book of the Fallen by Steven Erikson

Not a place but a legendary march — Coltaine's fighting retreat across Seven Cities, protecting thirty thousand refugees while seven armies tried to destroy them.

The Chain of Dogs was Coltaine's impossible retreat: a Wickan Fist leading a column of thirty thousand Malazan refugees across the entire breadth of Seven Cities while the Whirlwind rebellion threw army after army against him. Every river crossing was a battle. Every camp was a siege. The Wickan cavalry and the Seventh Army fought rearguard actions that entered legend while they happened. Coltaine reached Aren. The garrison refused to open the gates. The army was destroyed within sight of salvation, and Coltaine was crucified. The refugees he'd protected across a continent watched him die. Duiker — the historian who marched with the chain — survived to record it, and the record broke the Empire's heart.

Appearance

The route stretches across the breadth of Seven Cities — river crossings churned to mud and blood, plains littered with the dead of both sides, desert stretches where the column thinned to a thread of desperate humanity. The trail is marked by cairns, mass graves, and the bones of Wickan war dogs.
