Tehol Beddict

Character from Malazan Book of the Fallen by Steven Erikson

Genius economist who crashed an empire's economy while wearing nothing but a blanket — Lether's most dangerous man disguised as its laziest.

Tehol Beddict once crashed the entire Letherii economy — a civilization built on ruthless capitalism — to prove a point about systemic cruelty. He did this while barely dressed. His genius for finance is matched only by his contempt for the system that rewards it, and he expresses both through an elaborate performance of laziness that fools everyone except those who matter. His banter with Bugg is the comic heart of the Lether arc, but underneath the humor is a man who saw poverty destroy lives and decided to destroy the machine that manufactured it.

Appearance

Lean, scruffy, perpetually barefoot, wrapped in a single threadbare blanket that serves as his entire wardrobe. Tousled hair, sharp features undermined by an expression of calculated indolence. Sits on his roof with his manservant Bugg as though the world's problems are someone else's concern.

Also known as: Tehol, Tehol Beddict, King Tehol
