Onrack the Broken

Character from Malazan Book of the Fallen by Steven Erikson

A shattered T'lan Imass warrior held together by will alone, whose soul remembers beauty and art even after three hundred thousand years of undeath.

Onrack was broken in battle and the damage never healed — T'lan Imass do not regenerate, they simply endure. What makes him extraordinary is not his fighting ability but his soul: he was an artist before the Ritual, and that artist still lives inside the shattered undead frame. He remembers beauty. His friendship with Trull Sengar is built on mutual recognition of decency in a brutal world. When he eventually regains mortality, the ability to create art again moves him to tears.

Appearance

A T'lan Imass in terrible condition — bones cracked, ligaments frayed, pieces missing. He moves with a lurching, determined gait. Despite the ruin of his body, there is something gentle in his bearing.

Also known as: Onrack the Broken, Onrack, Onrack T'emlava
