Character from Malazan Book of the Fallen by Steven Erikson
Trell guardian bound by ancient oath to keep Icarium contained — a massive, gentle scholar who has spent centuries lying to his only friend to save the world from him.
Mappo is devotion made flesh and the cost of that devotion made visible. He was tasked by the Nameless Ones to watch Icarium, to be his companion, to keep the Lifestealer calm — and to kill him if containment fails. He chose companionship over assassination and has spent centuries building a friendship on a foundation of necessary lies. Every gentle conversation, every shared discovery, every quiet evening is shadowed by the knowledge that Mappo could become the executioner at any moment. He loves Icarium like a brother and fears him like a natural disaster.
Massive even by Trell standards — hunched, heavy-shouldered, with a broad face, small tusks, and sad brown eyes. His hands are enormous and surprisingly gentle. Wears travel-worn clothing and carries the weight of centuries in his posture.
