Crokus Younghand

Character from Malazan Book of the Fallen by Steven Erikson

Young Darujhistan thief who fell in love with an assassin and lost his innocence to a world that grinds idealists into weapons.

Crokus began as a romantic — a thief who stole for the thrill and fell in love with Sorry/Apsalar without understanding what had been done to her. His journey from Crokus to Cutter is the series' quiet tragedy of lost innocence: the world taught him that caring about people means watching them suffer, and he responded by trying to become someone who doesn't care. He never quite succeeds, which is both his saving grace and his curse.

Appearance

Young, wiry, dark-haired, with the quick hands of a born pickpocket and the open face of someone who hasn't yet learned to hide what he feels. Later, as Cutter, the openness hardens into something leaner and more guarded.
