The Grand Library

Location from Mage Errant by John Bierce

Kanderon Crux's extraplanar domain within Skyhold — an impossibly vast repository of over twelve million indexed books that exists in a space larger than the fortress that contains it.

The Grand Library is Kanderon's masterwork — not her most powerful creation, but the one that most clearly expresses her values. It exists in extraplanar space anchored within Skyhold, meaning its interior is vastly larger than its exterior footprint. Over twelve million books are indexed here, spanning every subject, language, and era that Kanderon's Librarian Errants have been able to collect over eight centuries. For students, the Library is both resource and test — navigating it requires magical and intellectual skill, and its deeper sections contain knowledge that is genuinely dangerous. Alustin's role as a Librarian Errant means he feeds this collection, and Hugh's bond with Mackerel gives him unusual access to its pocket-dimension storage capabilities.

Appearance

An interior space that defies the architecture containing it — shelves stretching upward beyond sight, corridors branching into reading halls and specialized collections that seem to occupy more volume than the mountain around them could possibly hold. The lighting is warm and steady, the air carries the scent of old paper and preservation magic, and the quiet is the deep, intentional silence of a space designed to protect knowledge from time itself.
