Warlock Pacts

Item from Mage Errant by John Bierce

Magical bonds between mages — or between mages and Great Powers — that share affinities across partners, creating mutual dependency and dramatically amplifying each participant's magical versatility.

Warlock pacts are one of the most powerful — and most intimate — magical constructs on Anastis. By forming a pact, mages gain access to each other's affinities, dramatically expanding their magical versatility at the cost of creating a permanent bond that cannot be easily severed. Hugh, Talia, Sabae, and Godrick share a four-way warlock pact that gives each of them access to all the others' natural affinities. This transforms four specialists into four versatile mages, which is why their group punches so far above its weight class. The pact also creates emotional resonance between partners — they sense each other's states, share discomfort, and develop a closeness that blurs the line between friendship and something more fundamental. Pacts with Great Powers operate differently — the power differential means the lesser mage gains far more than they contribute, but the Great Power gains loyalty, surveillance, and a mortal agent. Hugh's pact with Kanderon layers on top of his group pact, giving him additional affinities at the cost of deeper entanglement in Great Power politics.

Appearance

Warlock pacts manifest physically through changes in the bonded mages. Hugh's vivid green cat eyes are the most visible mark of his pact. Other physical changes vary — some pacts alter skin tone, hair color, or produce new markings. The bond itself is invisible but magically perceptible as a web of shared mana channels connecting the partners.
