The island of Madagascar is where the franchise discovers what its characters are made of. Alex's instincts surface here. Marty decides whether the wild is worth wanting. Gloria demonstrates that she's been fine all along. Melman does something brave. The island is also politically complex in ways the Zoosters never fully mapped: the Kingdom of Madagascar, the Fossa Territory, the Aye-Aye Kingdom, the Rat Kingdom, the Butterfly Kingdom, the Mountain Lemur Kingdom. All of these have views about each other. The sea surrounding it is named ominously — the Sea of Despair, the Sea of the Doomed, the Passage of Loneliness — which tells you something about what leaving feels like.
A large tropical island with dense jungle, beaches, baobab trees, and the particular quality of somewhere that was never designed for four zoo animals from New York. The Fossa territory sits near the lemur kingdom. The beach where the Zoosters land opens into jungle almost immediately.
