African Wildlife Reserve

Location from Madagascar by DreamWorks Animation

The mainland African wildlife reserve where Alex was born — the pride's territory, Zuba and Florrie's home, and the site of Alex's belated rite of passage.

This is where Alex came from, though he doesn't know it for most of Madagascar 2. It's a functional wildlife reserve managed by its animal communities — lions at the center, other species in arranged proximity. The water conflict in Madagascar 2 is the reserve's defining crisis: tourists have built a dam upstream and cut off the waterhole. Makunga's solution is violence. Alex, Zuba, and the rest figure out a better answer. The reserve is also where Alex gets to be both things at once: a zoo lion who dances and a wild lion's son. The film argues these aren't contradictions. The reserve, by the end, seems to accept this.

Appearance

Open savanna with waterhole at the center, rock formations, and the wide horizon of the African plains. The pride lives near the waterhole. The reserve also serves as a crash landing site for a penguins-piloted aircraft, which did not improve anyone's morning.
