Rico doesn't talk, exactly — he communicates through grunts, gestures, occasional sound effects, and the things he regurgitates. His digestive system functions as a bottomless munitions locker: he's produced fishing poles, guided missiles, spare change, bass guitars, and Mort on at least one occasion. He approaches this as entirely normal. He loves explosions in the uncomplicated way of someone whose primary emotional register is enthusiasm. He cuddles sticks of TNT. He finds the chaos of a crisis genuinely enjoyable. He is Skipper's most reliable soldier not because he doesn't disagree but because disagreement doesn't occur to him — when Skipper says go, Rico goes, and he goes hard. He has a small plastic Barbie doll named Ms. Perky that he carries with him. This is not discussed. It is touching.
Shorter and stockier than Kowalski, with scruffy feathers on his head, a visible scar on the left side of his beak, and a double chin that wasn't there in the first film. His build has grown more distinct over the franchise. Carries himself with the easy aggression of someone who is always slightly looking for a reason. Frequently clutching something that shouldn't be inside a penguin.
