Nana's first appearance is in Grand Central Station, where she mistakes Alex for an attacking animal, kicks him where it hurts, pepper sprays him, and walks away. The film treats this as a comedic moment. In retrospect, it's a warning. In Africa she becomes the leader of a stranded tourist army, goes toe-to-toe with Alex and Zuba simultaneously, and walks away. The only time she loses anything is when she's physically separated from her handbag, and even then it's a tactical retreat rather than a defeat. She is otherwise grandmotherly in the correct direction — friendly to people, happy to give Private a home for Christmas. She just has a particular reaction to lions that nobody has been able to change.
