Maurice is the smartest character in any room that contains King Julien, which is most rooms he's ever been in. He is more grounded than any of the other lemurs, more intelligent than most of the zoo animals, and entirely aware that his job is to make a dramatic fool look like a functional king. He does this job well. He gives good advice. He gets ignored. He gives more advice. Occasionally the advice gets through and the kingdom doesn't collapse, and Maurice notes this quietly and doesn't mention it. He loves dancing. He loves parties. He's loyal to Julien in the deep way of someone who chose this situation rather than merely inherited it. That choice was made long ago and he doesn't revisit it. In Madagascar 3 he smiled when he thought Julien had fallen to his death. He was sad when Julien survived. This is not a contradiction — it's a long relationship.
