A sophisticated English-accented chimpanzee who speaks eloquently, throws poop at people, cannot read a single word of English, and serves as interpreter for his mute partner Phil.
Mason is the Felix to Phil's Oscar — neat, articulate, fond of poetry and fine cuisine and the finer things, and also a chimpanzee who throws poop at people. These two facts coexist without any apparent contradiction. He speaks with an English accent that turns out to be Canadian, per a throwaway line that nobody pursued. He communicates Phil's sign language to everyone else because Phil doesn't speak aloud. Mason, in turn, cannot read a word of English — Phil handles the reading. Their division of labor is deeply complementary. Between the two of them, they cover verbal communication, written communication, and weapons-grade flung excrement.
A dark brown chimpanzee of standard build, distinguished from Phil by his darker fur and slightly more upright posture. Carries himself with the bearing of a fine gentleman at a slightly rundown club. In Madagascar 3, dressed as the King of Versailles with considerable commitment.
