Marlene

Character from Madagascar by DreamWorks Animation

The Central Park Zoo's resident otter — sensible, independent, and the one character who remains neutral between the penguins and the lemurs while somehow being close friends with both.

Marlene came from an aquarium in Northern California. She's still adjusting to Manhattan, which is a normal response to Manhattan. She's smart, funny, level-headed, and the person the penguins go to when they need a fifth for a five-man team. She frequently tells Skipper he's being paranoid. She's right about this about 60% of the time, which is higher than Skipper's base rate. Their friendship persists despite this. Her one notable issue: she goes feral the moment she leaves the zoo grounds. Not dramatically, not symbolically — literally wild, complete personality change, chases things. She's fine inside the sewers. The zoo walls are the exact edge of her domestication. She has a recurring fantasy about someone playing Spanish guitar for her. This has not yet been resolved.

Appearance

A sleek otter with brown fur and the casual athleticism of a swimmer who spends most of her day in the water. Her fur turned white once from excessive chlorine in her pool, which caused an incident. Usually has the easy, relaxed posture of someone comfortable in her own habitat.
