The self-declared king of the lemurs — loud, vain, wrong about everything, right about some things, and genuinely difficult to dislike despite his best efforts.
Julien rules the Kingdom of Madagascar with supreme confidence and extremely limited information. He makes proclamations. He holds ceremonies for things that don't require ceremonies. He invented the holiday Happy King Julien Day and cannot understand why it isn't observed more broadly. His self-regard is total and his self-awareness is selective. He genuinely believes the sky spirits are listening to him. He also, on occasion, accidentally does the right thing — outwitting Dr. Blowhole, serving as a double agent, defusing a situation with dancing — and he treats this as further evidence of his own genius rather than luck. His relationship with Maurice is the most honest thing about him: he takes Maurice for granted constantly and would fall apart without him. His relationship with Mort is equally honest: he finds Mort annoying, enjoys being worshipped, and would genuinely mourn him. He fell in love with Sonya the Bear at Circus Zaragoza. He gave up his crown for her. This was the most surprising thing Julien has ever done, and also entirely in character.
A slim black-and-white ring-tailed lemur with pointed ears, a long striped tail he holds aloft with kingly intention, and auburn eyes with yellow sclera. Distinctive from the other ring-tails for his narrow face and smaller build. Almost always wearing a crown — he has several, ranging from his green-and-yellow leaf crown to a purple feathered design. Moves with the kind of flair that makes you think he planned everything, even when he didn't.
