Item from The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien
An Elven short sword that glows blue in the presence of orcs — small enough for a Hobbit to wield as a proper sword, and sharper than anything its size should be.
Sting is a weapon that punches above its weight. In Elven terms it is barely a dagger, but in a Hobbit's hands it is a sword, and it carries the ancient craft of Gondolin — a city of Elven smiths whose work has never been surpassed. The blade cuts through orc-armor and spider-web alike with unsettling ease, and its blue glow serves as an early warning system that has saved lives more than once. The psychological effect of Sting is almost as important as its edge. Shelob, the ancient spider of Cirith Ungol, recoiled from it — not because the blade could kill her easily but because the light of Gondolin's craft is anathema to creatures of darkness. For its Hobbit bearers, Sting transforms the act of self-defense from hopeless to possible. It does not make a Hobbit into a warrior, but it makes a Hobbit's courage count.
A leaf-shaped blade roughly eighteen inches long, Elven-crafted with a luminous quality to the steel. The edges are impossibly fine and never dull. When orcs or goblins are near, the blade emits a cold blue glow that intensifies with proximity. The hilt is simple but elegant, sized for a Hobbit's hand. The scabbard is plain leather.
