What They Know

• The Silmarils contain the only surviving light of the Two Trees of Valinor — before the sun and moon existed
• Fëanor's Oath to recover the Silmarils caused the kinslaying at Alqualondë and centuries of devastating war
• The jewels burn the hands of anyone morally unworthy — eventually this included the sons of Fëanor themselves
• One Silmaril became Eärendil's star (its light is in the Phial of Galadriel), one fell into the sea, one into the earth
• No craft in the world can recreate the Silmarils — even Fëanor said he could not make them again
