The Silmarils
Item from The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien
Three jewels containing the light of the Two Trees of Valinor — the most beautiful and most destructive objects ever created, for which entire civilizations burned.
Also known as: the Silmarils, the Great Jewels, Fëanor's jewels, the three jewels
What They Know
- The Silmarils contain the only surviving light of the Two Trees of Valinor — before the sun and moon existed
- Fëanor's Oath to recover the Silmarils caused the kinslaying at Alqualondë and centuries of devastating war
- The jewels burn the hands of anyone morally unworthy — eventually this included the sons of Fëanor themselves
- One Silmaril became Eärendil's star (its light is in the Phial of Galadriel), one fell into the sea, one into the earth
- No craft in the world can recreate the Silmarils — even Fëanor said he could not make them again
