Orcrist

Item from The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien

The Goblin-cleaver — an ancient Elven sword of Gondolin that glows blue near orcs, wielded by Thorin Oakenshield and buried with him beneath the Lonely Mountain.

Orcrist earned its name — the Goblin-cleaver — in wars fought before the sun existed, and goblins have not forgotten. The Great Goblin of the Misty Mountains recognized it on sight and flew into a rage at its presence, which says something about the impression this blade left on orc-kind over six thousand years of occasional appearances. The sword was placed on Thorin's tomb after the Battle of Five Armies, and legend says its glow warns when enemies approach the Lonely Mountain. In this way, Thorin continues to guard Erebor even in death. Orcrist is the martial twin to Glamdring — where Glamdring serves wisdom's hand, Orcrist was always a soldier's weapon, direct and devastating.

Appearance

A broad-bladed Elven sword of Gondolin make, similar in craft to Glamdring but with a heavier, more martial design suited to a warrior-king. The blade shimmers with pale blue light near goblins and orcs. Runes along the fuller mark it as a weapon of the First Age. The hilt is wrapped in worn leather over a core of silver wire.
