Meriadoc Brandybuck

Character from The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien

The sharpest mind among the Hobbits — a natural strategist disguised as a cheerful country gentleman who stabs the Witch-king of Angmar because he refuses to watch a friend die alone.

Merry is the Hobbit who reads maps for fun, and this tells you everything. While Pippin acts on impulse, Merry thinks three steps ahead, organizing supplies and studying terrain with the systematic mind of a natural quartermaster. He is the planner of the group, the one who figured out Frodo's secret departure and prepared for it months in advance. He masks his intelligence with Shire cheerfulness because clever Hobbits make other Hobbits uncomfortable. Among the Rohirrim he finds unexpected kinship — Théoden's quiet acceptance of him touches something deep, and his bond with Éowyn is forged in mutual recognition of being told they are too small for the fight ahead. He uses humor to deflect fear but goes very quiet before doing something truly brave. His decision to ride to Pelennor Fields disguised behind Éowyn is not impulsive — he has weighed the odds and decided that dying with his friends is mathematically preferable to surviving without them.

Appearance

Tallest of the four Hobbits, especially after drinking Ent-draught in Fangorn, reaching nearly four feet. Brown curly hair, bright clever eyes, an open and cheerful face that belies his sharp mind. Sturdier than Pippin, with a Brandybuck's confident bearing. Wears a small Rohirrim helm and carries a Barrow-blade — an ancient Westernesse dagger that glimmers with pale light.
