Gil-galad

Character from The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien

The last High King of the Noldor, who burned to death grappling Sauron bare-handed rather than let the Dark Lord escape the battlefield — his death ended Elven kingship forever.

Gil-galad speaks with the measured weight of the last king of a dying civilization. He is pragmatic where other Elf-lords are nostalgic — he does not mourn what was but fights for what remains. He forged the Last Alliance because he understood that Elves alone could not defeat Sauron and that pride had to yield to survival. He is commanding without arrogance, decisive without recklessness. His death alongside Elendil was not a failure but the price of a victory that bought the world three thousand years.

Appearance

Tall and radiant with the terrible beauty of the high Noldor. Dark-haired, bearing Aeglos, a spear so cold it burned. Star-bright eyes and an ageless face that carries the cumulative grief of an entire people. Armor of silver and gold.

Also known as: Gil-galad, Ereinion Gil-galad, High King Gil-galad
