Item from Little Witch Academia by Studio Trigger / Yoh Yoshinari
The World Tree — a cosmic entity of astronomical proportions whose branches once held stars in place and whose energy made all magic possible, now reduced to the fading ley lines that run beneath the Earth like a dying circulatory system.
Yggdrasil is the answer to every question the show asks about why magic is dying. The World Tree grew from the seed of creation, fed by the belief of sentient beings. Its energy made Sorcerer's Stones unnecessary — magic was everywhere, free, abundant. When human belief in magic waned, Yggdrasil withered, and what remained were the ley lines — its dried-up branches, carrying less energy every century. The Grand Triskellion is Yggdrasil's heart, preserved by the Nine Olde Witches against the day when belief could be restored. When Akko unlocks it, she doesn't cast a spell — she restores the conditions under which Yggdrasil can grow again. The World Tree returns because people believe in magic again, and people believe in magic again because they watched a girl who couldn't fly save the world by refusing to stop trying. Yggdrasil is the show's cosmology, its mythology, and its theme crystallized into a single image: a tree that grows when you believe in it and dies when you don't.
In its original form: a tree of cosmic scale whose branches extended across the entire planet, holding celestial bodies in place and radiating magical energy that flooded the cosmos. The branches glowed with the light of creation. After withering: invisible, existing only as the ley line network — underground channels of diminishing energy that most people don't know are the remnants of something that once encompassed the world. When revived by the Grand Triskellion: Yggdrasil erupts from the Tower of Shadow as a pillar of light that becomes a tree of impossible size, its branches reaching into space, its roots threading through every ley line on Earth. The visual is Studio Trigger's most ambitious moment — a tree made of light and belief growing until it fills the sky.
