It's the life support system for the entire academy. Without it, wands don't work, brooms don't fly, potions don't brew, and Luna Nova is just a collection of very old buildings full of very frustrated women. The Stone's effective radius of three miles creates an invisible boundary beyond which magic becomes increasingly difficult. This limitation is why witches can't just practice magic anywhere — they're tethered to infrastructure that is itself tethered to fading ley lines. The entire magical world is a civilization running on a power grid that's losing voltage. In the era before Yggdrasil withered, Sorcerer's Stones were unnecessary — the World Tree provided unlimited magical energy everywhere. The Stones are a crutch, an adaptation to scarcity, and the fact that even they are now struggling is the clearest sign that magic is in its final decline.
