The Backstreets exist in every District as the counterpart to the Nests. Residents are people who cannot afford Wing protection and must fight for survival. Syndicates like the Five Fingers, Los Mariachis, the Tingtang Gang, and the Yurodiviye carve territory and impose their own brutal order. The Night in the Backstreets -- an 81-minute lawless period from 3:13 to 4:34 AM -- is when recording is prohibited and Sweepers scour the area for corpses and debris. The Backstreets serve a cruel social function: they motivate Nest citizens to work hard to avoid demotion, and Backstreet dwellers to strive for Nest admission. It is where most Fixers earn their living and most people lose theirs.
Cramped, filthy streets bathed in the glow of flickering neon and chemical runoff. Buildings stack haphazardly, augmentation shops sit next to syndicate dens, and the air carries the permanent smell of ozone and unwashed humanity. Security ranges from chain fences to nothing at all. The architecture deteriorates further from the Nest boundary, eventually dissolving into something barely distinguishable from wilderness.
