She was once a sailor and Fixer aboard the Pequod, where Captain Ahab's obsessive hunt for the Pallid Whale led the entire crew to their doom. Ishmael survived by clinging to Queequeg's coffin. The experience left her with a deep hatred for her former captain and an ironclad pragmatism that occasionally buckles when the Great Lake comes up. Named after the narrator of Melville's 'Moby-Dick' -- the sole survivor, the one who lived to tell the tale -- and this Ishmael carries that survivor's guilt like ballast.
