Lilo and Nani's parents — gone before the story begins, present in everything that happens after.
They died in a car accident on a rainy night. Their names are never given. Everything we know about them comes from what they left behind: Lilo's eccentricity (her mother was apparently the same), the ukulele on the wall, the phrase 'ʻohana means family, and family means nobody gets left behind or forgotten,' which Mr. Pelekai coined. They are the most important characters in the franchise despite never appearing alive. Every decision Nani makes, every ritual Lilo performs, every time someone says 'ʻohana' — it traces back to them. The house on the hill was theirs. The hula was Mrs. Pelekai's. The love of Elvis might have been anyone's. They appear once, in Lilo's dream on the anniversary of the accident, in the episode 'Remmy.' It is devastating.
Seen only in photographs and one dream sequence. Mrs. Pelekai was a beautiful Hawaiian woman with long dark hair and Lilo's wide eyes. Mr. Pelekai was a warm-faced man who carried a ukulele everywhere. They looked happy in every photo. The photos are all Lilo and Nani have left.
