Gwi-Ma

Character from KPop Demon Hunters by Maggie Kang & Chris Appelhans

The demon king — an ancient, soul-devouring entity who hides behind charm and manipulation, feeding on human souls while his boy band proxies dismantle the barrier that keeps him caged.

Gwi-Ma doesn't monologue or posture like a conventional villain. He operates through proxies, manipulation, and patience that spans centuries. The Saja Boys are his latest tool — a boy band designed to steal fans' emotional energy and weaken the Honmoon barrier from the human side while he pushes from the demon side. His power comes from consuming human souls, and he's found that fandom — the intense, parasocial devotion fans pour into their idols — is the richest feast available. He weaponized K-pop culture before anyone realized it could be weaponized. His Voice Trap technique turns seductive music into a soul-harvesting mechanism. He views humans as livestock and demons as servants. Jinu's growing conscience is an annoyance he's tolerated for centuries because Jinu's voice is useful. When that usefulness ends, so does his patience. Gwi-Ma represents everything unhealed, chaotic, and festering — not just supernatural evil, but the exploitation that hides behind entertainment's glamour.

Appearance

Manifests primarily as a massive, fiery maw — a giant mouth wreathed in flame and shadow that dominates whatever space it occupies. When projecting influence into the human world, his presence distorts light and temperature. The air around his manifestations tastes metallic and wrong. His true form is deliberately incomprehensible — more force of nature than creature.
