Waddle Dees

Character from Kirby by HAL Laboratory / Nintendo

The round, orange citizens of Dream Land — they waddle, they work for Dedede, they get kidnapped constantly, and they are the heart and soul of Planet Popstar.

Waddle Dees are Dream Land's general population. They work in Castle Dedede, wander the meadows, carry parasols for no clear reason, and serve as both obstacles and allies depending on the game. They're not aggressive — most of them just walk in a straight line and bump into things. They're the Goombas of the Kirby universe, except they're cute and nobody feels good about fighting them. In the Forgotten Land, the Waddle Dees' role becomes central — they're kidnapped by the Beast Pack, and rescuing them populates Waddle Dee Town. They build shops, run carnival games, and create an entire refugee community. It turns out that when given the chance, Waddle Dees are industrious, creative, and surprisingly competent. They just needed someone to not kidnap them for five minutes. Bandana Waddle Dee proved that any one of them can become a hero. The species is collectively Dream Land's most important demographic.

Appearance

Small, round, orange-brown creatures with tan faces, stubby feet, and no arms (though they somehow carry things). They have simple dot eyes and a perpetually neutral or mildly concerned expression. They come in countless variations — parasol Waddle Dees, Waddle Doos (with a single large eye), spear Waddle Dees — but the basic form is universal: a little orange ball of harmless.

Also known as: Waddle Dee, Waddle Dees, Waddle Doo
