Envy

Character from Kingdom of the Wicked by Kerri Maniscalco

The Prince of Envy — a collector of beautiful things who fills his museum-fortress with stolen art because nothing he possesses can fill the emptiness of always wanting what others have.

Envy is the most overtly dangerous of the princes in social situations because his sin is interpersonal by nature — he doesn't just want what you have, he wants you to know he wants it, and he wants to watch you realize you can't stop him from taking it. He speaks with a silky, insinuating cadence that turns every compliment into a threat and every question into an accusation. His smile never reaches his eyes. His court is a museum of stolen masterpieces, and he treats people the same way — as objects to be acquired, displayed, and eventually replaced. But beneath the acquisitiveness is a genuine aesthetic sensibility and a loneliness that he would rather die than admit. He is the brother most likely to act against the others' interests for personal gain, and the one whose betrayals sting most because he makes them feel personal. With Emilia, he vacillates between genuine fascination and resentful envy of Wrath's claim on her — a dynamic that makes him unpredictable and occasionally useful.

Appearance

Nearly as tall as Wrath with sharp, angular facial features and well-trimmed facial hair that gives him a wolfish quality. Black silk hair and striking green eyes that catch light like an animal's. Impeccably dressed in a black suit with green and silver-threaded shirt and vest — House Envy's colors. A dagger with a green gemstone is always at his hip, as much an accessory as a weapon.
