Traverse Town

Location from Kingdom Hearts by Tetsuya Nomura / Square Enix & Disney

A refuge world under eternal night where survivors of destroyed worlds gather — it appears only when someone is in need of shelter.

Traverse Town is the universe's safety net — a world that exists between realms, materializing to catch the survivors when their worlds fall to darkness. It is not a natural world but a patchwork of remnants, which explains its odd geography and perpetual night. For Sora, it was the first stop on a journey that would span the cosmos. Here he met Donald and Goofy for the first time, learned about the Keyblade from Leon, and discovered that his friends were scattered across worlds he never knew existed. The town serves as a hub, a haven, and a reminder that even in the darkest times, there are places of shelter. Leon, Yuffie, Aerith, Cid, and Merlin all took refuge here after Radiant Garden fell, forming a community of displaced heroes who would later return to rebuild their home.

Appearance

A quaint European-style town under a permanent starlit sky. Gas lamps illuminate cobblestone streets that wind between stone buildings with wooden shutters. The town is divided into multiple districts connected by large doors, featuring a fountain plaza, an accessory shop, and Merlin's house. Neon signs flicker in the second district, and stars are always clearly visible overhead.
