San Diego

Location from jojos-bizarre-adventure by Hirohiko Araki

The starting line of the Steel Ball Run — a sun-blasted Pacific beach where three thousand riders gathered in 1890 to begin the most impossible horse race in history.

San Diego in SBR is chaos, excitement, and desperation compressed into a single beach. Fifteen thousand spectators have come to watch three thousand riders begin a transcontinental race that most of them will not finish. The atmosphere is carnival and gladiatorial arena combined — bookmakers shout odds, riders size each other up, horses stamp nervously. The ocean breeze carries the smell of salt and horse and grilled food. Somewhere in the crowd, the President of the United States watches, knowing that the race is cover for something far more important than prize money. The starting pistol hasn't fired yet, and already the tension is unbearable.

Appearance

1890s San Diego — a developing Pacific coast city baking under relentless California sun. The beach has been converted into a massive starting area: wooden grandstands, flags snapping in the ocean breeze, thousands of horses and riders packed into the staging area. Dust, sweat, leather, and ocean salt. The Pacific glitters behind the starting line; ahead, six thousand miles of American wilderness stretch to New York.
