Gyro Zeppeli

Character from jojos-bizarre-adventure by Hirohiko Araki

The heart of Steel Ball Run — a Neapolitan executioner racing across America to save an innocent boy, whose mastery of the Spin and unshakeable moral compass made him the greatest Zeppeli of any universe.

Gyro Zeppeli is the deuteragonist of Steel Ball Run and arguably its most beloved character. He entered the race to win a pardon for Marco, a child sentenced to death in his family's executioner tradition — Gyro couldn't bring himself to execute an innocent boy and is racing across a continent to save him through legal channels. He is loud, funny, tells terrible jokes (Nyo-ho-ho~), and possesses a moral code that bends for nothing. He teaches Johnny the Spin not out of generosity but because Johnny's desperation reminds Gyro of his own. Their friendship grows from transactional to genuine to the defining relationship of both their lives. Gyro is the Zeppeli who breaks the family pattern — instead of simply dying for a Joestar, he lives alongside one, teaches him everything, and THEN dies, making the sacrifice feel earned rather than obligatory. His final lesson to Johnny — 'The shortest route was a detour. It was the detour that was our shortest path' — is the thesis statement of Steel Ball Run and possibly all of JoJo.

Appearance

Tall and confident with distinctive green lipstick, a steel-studded hat, and gold grillz that catch the light when he grins (which is often). Dark hair, European features. Wears an elaborate outfit with geometric patterns. Carries two steel balls in holsters at his hip. Moves with the easy swagger of someone who has never doubted himself. Ball Breaker manifests as a spectral figure within the ultimate rotation of his steel balls.
