Catcher is the first person at Galens to treat Rei like a human being rather than a statistic, and he does it because it's simply how he operates. He's not making a statement. He's not seeing hidden potential. He just thinks his roommate seems like a good guy, and Catcher is the kind of person for whom that's sufficient reason to be kind. He's a Phalanx-type — defensive specialist, shield-and-endurance fighter. In combat, he absorbs damage that would flatten other cadets and creates space for his teammates to operate. The role suits his personality: he protects. He stabilizes. He's the calm center that lets the chaos around him function. His commentary is dry and sarcastic — he processes stress through humor and handles Rei's terrifying growth rate with the equanimity of someone watching a nature documentary. 'Oh, Rei did something impossible again? Must be Thursday.' He is smart enough to understand the tactical implications of Rei's Atypical classification before most of the academy does, and cool enough under pressure to use that understanding in combat.
