Thaedus is the founder and leader of the Coalition of Planets — the galaxy-spanning alliance formed specifically to oppose Viltrumite expansion. The twist is that he's a Viltrumite himself, one who rejected his species' ideology of conquest centuries ago. He is the proof that Viltrumites can choose differently, which makes him the ideological predecessor to Nolan's eventual redemption. His leadership of the Coalition is both principled and pragmatic — he's willing to make hard choices, but his moral compass points toward liberation rather than domination.
