Shapesmith replaced the real astronaut Rus Livingston after encountering him on Mars, then found himself drawn into Earth's superhero community by accident and stayed by choice. He's earnest, somewhat naive about human social customs, and genuinely wants to help. His shapeshifting makes him invaluable for infiltration and disguise, and his alien perspective often provides solutions that human heroes would never consider.
In his assumed human form, appears as the astronaut Rus Livingston — average build, brown hair, unremarkable face. In his natural Martian form, a pale, translucent alien with shifting features. Tends to get small details wrong when shapeshifting — a nose slightly off, a hand with too many fingers — which gives him away to perceptive observers.
