Reghed Glacier

Location from Icewind Dale by R.A. Salvatore / Wizards of the Coast / Black Isle Studios

An ancient glacier east of Ten-Towns, miles thick and impossibly old — it conceals buried civilizations beneath its ice and gives its name to the barbarian tribes who roam its edges.

Standing near the glacier's edge, the cold radiates outward like heat from a forge — an aggressive, physical presence that penetrates furs and leathers. The air tastes of mineral dust and carries a faint ozone tang from the constant static discharge between ice crystals. Sound behaves strangely on the glacier: voices echo from surfaces that shouldn't reflect them, and deep within the ice, resonant booms propagate for miles as the glacier settles. Crevasses open without warning, some bottomless, others revealing glimpses of structures frozen far below — walls, towers, streets of a city that should not exist. The Reghed barbarian tribes believe the glacier is sacred, the frozen body of a primordial god. They are not entirely wrong. Beneath miles of ice lies Ythryn, a Netherese flying city that crashed here millennia ago, its magic still flickering in the depths.

Appearance

A titanic wall of blue-white ice that stretches from horizon to horizon, its leading edge a jagged cliff face over a hundred feet high. The surface is a maze of crevasses, pressure ridges, and wind-carved formations that shift imperceptibly year by year. Deep within, the ice takes on shades of cobalt and emerald where ancient air pockets and sediment layers create bands of color. The glacier creaks and groans constantly, a sound like a living thing breathing in geological time. At its margins, meltwater pools form in summer, stained turquoise by glacial flour.
