Menzoberranzan

Location from Icewind Dale by R.A. Salvatore / Wizards of the Coast / Black Isle Studios

The great drow city in the Underdark, ruled by matron mothers and Lolth's priestesses — a place of breathtaking beauty and unspeakable cruelty where Drizzt Do'Urden was born.

Menzoberranzan is a contradiction made manifest — a city of exquisite artistry built on a foundation of slavery, assassination, and religious fanaticism. The air is warm and carries a complex layering of scents: incense from Lolth's temples, the metallic tang of adamantine being forged, exotic fungi from the markets, and beneath it all, the copper smell of old blood. Sound carries differently in the cavern — conversations echo and distort, making eavesdropping both easy and unreliable. Music drifts from noble houses — haunting melodies played on instruments unknown on the surface. The political landscape shifts constantly as houses scheme against one another for Lolth's favor, and every drow navigates an intricate web of alliances, betrayals, and unspoken rules. A surface dweller in Menzoberranzan would be dead, enslaved, or worse within hours of discovery.

Appearance

An immense underground cavern housing a city of soaring spires and graceful bridges carved from black and purple stone. Faerie fire illuminates every surface in shifting hues of violet, blue, and crimson, casting the city in perpetual twilight. The great houses rise in tiers above the common districts, each compound a fortress of elegant menace. Narbondel, a natural stone pillar at the cavern's center, serves as the city's clock — heated magically from base to tip each day. The cavern ceiling is so high it disappears into darkness, and stalactites the size of towers hang above like inverted cathedrals. Spider motifs decorate everything — in carved relief, living webs, and the actual spiders that roam freely as sacred creatures.
