The largest of Icewind Dale's three lakes — its knucklehead trout sustain four towns and fuel the scrimshaw trade that connects Ten-Towns to the outside world.
Maer Dualdon dominates the western half of Ten-Towns' geography. The lake produces the distinctive cracking and booming sounds of shifting ice throughout winter — deep, resonant reports that carry across the tundra. The water is cold enough to kill an unprotected swimmer in minutes even in summer. Knucklehead trout, prized for their ivory-like bones, school in the deeper waters and are the foundation of the region's economy. Fishing rights on Maer Dualdon are a source of constant tension between the four towns on its shores.
An enormous freshwater lake stretching miles from shore to shore, its dark waters appearing black under overcast skies and steel-blue in the rare moments of clear weather. In winter, the surface freezes thick enough to walk on, though pressure cracks and thin spots make crossing treacherous. Fishing shanties cluster on the ice near the four shoreline towns.
