Location from Icewind Dale by R.A. Salvatore / Wizards of the Coast / Black Isle Studios
The most isolated of Ten-Towns, hidden among the trees on Maer Dualdon's northern shore — a haven for those who came to Icewind Dale to disappear.
Lonelywood attracts a particular kind of person — the sort who finds even Ten-Towns too crowded. The forest muffles the ever-present wind, creating pockets of eerie stillness between the trees. The scent of pine resin mingles with woodsmoke and the faint chemical tang of scrimshaw lacquer. Skilled artisans here carve knucklehead trout ivory into intricate scrimshaw pieces valued across the Sword Coast. The town has no formal defenses beyond the forest itself, which confuses attackers and provides natural concealment. Under the Rime, something has awakened in the deeper woods — strange lights and unsettling sounds emanate from the tree line at irregular intervals.
A town half-swallowed by the forest that gives it its name, with buildings constructed around and between the trees rather than in a cleared space. The canopy provides some shelter from wind and snow, giving Lonelywood a closeted, enclosed feeling entirely unlike the open tundra. Lanterns hanging from tree branches light the winding paths between buildings.
