Kuldahar

Location from Icewind Dale by R.A. Salvatore / Wizards of the Coast / Black Isle Studios

A remote village sheltered in a mountain valley by an enormous magical oak tree — the heart of the Icewind Dale computer game, where warmth persists against all reason.

Kuldahar is an impossibility made real — a pocket of warmth and life in the middle of the most hostile mountain range in the North. The Great Oak's magic creates a microclimate that keeps the valley temperate enough for gardens and livestock, and its canopy filters the harsh mountain light into a gentle green glow. The villagers are deeply spiritual, tending the oak as both their protector and their purpose. Arundel, the archdruid, once served as the village's spiritual guide. The peace of Kuldahar is fragile, however — threats from the surrounding mountains periodically test the village's defenses, and the Great Oak's power has begun to wane for reasons the druids cannot explain.

Appearance

A small village nestled in a protected valley within the Spine of the World, dominated by the Great Oak — an impossibly large tree whose canopy spreads over the entire settlement. The tree radiates visible warmth, and its leaves remain green year-round despite the surrounding arctic conditions. The buildings are simple wooden structures arranged in a rough circle around the oak's trunk, looking almost quaint compared to the harsh mountain terrain visible above the valley walls.
