Caves of Hunger

Location from Icewind Dale by R.A. Salvatore / Wizards of the Coast / Black Isle Studios

A treacherous network of ice caves within the Reghed Glacier — the only path to the buried city of Ythryn, and a gauntlet of starvation, predators, and madness.

The Caves of Hunger earn their name — they are a place of primal deprivation. The cold intensifies as one descends, passing through zones where even magical warmth fails. The ice itself seems to consume heat, light, and eventually hope. Strange creatures adapted to this impossible environment lurk in the deeper passages: ice trolls, frost salamanders, and things that have no surface analogues. The caves respond to the residual magic of Ythryn below, occasionally manifesting bizarre effects — gravity shifts, time loops, and walls that become temporarily transparent, revealing the frozen city far below like a mirage in ice.

Appearance

Tunnels carved through solid glacial ice, their walls a deep translucent blue that shifts to black in the deeper passages. The floors are slick and uneven, with meltwater channels creating treacherous footing. Crevasses open without warning into bottomless dark. The ice distorts sound, creating echoes that seem to come from every direction simultaneously.
