Knucklehead Trout Scrimshaw

Item from Icewind Dale by R.A. Salvatore / Wizards of the Coast / Black Isle Studios

Ivory-like carvings made from the bones of knucklehead trout — Ten-Towns' primary trade good and the economic lifeline that keeps these remote settlements from total irrelevance.

Scrimshaw is the reason Ten-Towns exists. The knucklehead trout found in the three lakes produce bones with the look and workability of ivory, and the carvings command premium prices in southern markets. Every town's economy revolves around fishing and carving. During Auril's everlasting winter, the lakes are freezing over and the trout are scarce, threatening economic collapse on top of starvation. Scrimshaw is not magical, but it is the most important substance in the region — without it, there is no reason for anyone to endure life this far north.

Appearance

Polished white carvings ranging from small figurines to elaborate decorative pieces. The bone material resembles fine ivory with a faint pearlescent sheen. Each piece is unique, hand-carved by local artisans.
