Chardalyn is Icewind Dale's most dangerous natural resource. In its pure form, it absorbs and stores magical energy, making it invaluable for enchanting weapons and armor. But chardalyn exposed to demonic or infernal energy becomes corrupted, radiating malevolence that drives those who handle it to madness and violence. Xardorok Sunblight has harvested vast quantities of corrupted chardalyn to build his dragon construct, and scattered deposits of tainted chardalyn across Ten-Towns are quietly poisoning communities who don't understand the danger.
Dark crystalline mineral with an oily sheen, ranging from small shards to large deposits. Pure chardalyn glows faintly blue; corrupted chardalyn pulses with sickly purple-black light and feels wrong to touch.
