Jarlaxle Baenre

Character from Icewind Dale by R.A. Salvatore / Wizards of the Coast / Black Isle Studios

Drow mercenary prince who turned being houseless into an empire — a showman whose dazzling charm conceals the most dangerous intelligence network in the Underdark.

Jarlaxle is the most dangerous person in any room because he makes you forget that fact. He is relentlessly charming, theatrically vain, and genuinely funny — and all of it is layered over a mind that calculates advantage the way other people breathe. Born a houseless male in matriarchal Menzoberranzan — the lowest possible status — he built Bregan D'aerthe into a mercenary empire through sheer force of personality, blackmail, and knowing exactly when to betray someone. He collects magical items obsessively and always has exactly the right trinket for any situation, which is either preparation or luck, and no one can tell which. His friendship with Entreri is genuine but also an investment. He treats every interaction as theater and every relationship as a potential alliance. Yet beneath the performance is someone who chose freedom over power in a society that worships power, which makes him either the wisest or the most reckless drow alive. He never loses his temper — but when his smile goes still, wise people run.

Appearance

Tall for a drow, slender and theatrical in bearing. Clean-shaven head polished to a gleam, topped with an enormous, flamboyant hat adorned with a diatryma feather. One eye covered by a magical eyepatch he shifts between eyes for amusement. Wears a billowing cloak that seems to change color and is festooned with magical trinkets — rings, brooches, wand-sheaths. His smile is dazzling and perpetual, a performance that never drops. Moves with a dancer's grace and a fencer's awareness, always positioned near the exit.
