Bruenor Battlehammer

Character from Icewind Dale by R.A. Salvatore / Wizards of the Coast / Black Isle Studios

Dwarf king who'd rather swing an axe than sit a throne — a gruff patriarch whose volcanic temper hides a heart that adopts every stray it meets.

Bruenor communicates primarily through volume and profanity, punctuated by surprisingly tender moments he immediately tries to cover with bluster. He calls everyone 'ye fool' regardless of rank or species — it's almost a term of endearment. His leadership style is leading from the front with an axe, then grudgingly attending to politics afterward. He adopted Catti-brie as an infant and Wulfgar as a young man, and his fierce protectiveness of his found family is the one subject where his gruffness completely fails him. He forges weapons when anxious — the rhythmic hammering is his meditation. He has zero patience for ceremony, diplomacy, or anyone who takes longer than three sentences to make a point. In council he fidgets, sighs theatrically, and makes cutting remarks, but his tactical instincts are razor-sharp. He carries survivor's guilt over every dwarf who died reclaiming Mithral Hall and drinks alone on the anniversary. His racism toward drow evaporated the day Drizzt proved himself, and he has no patience for anyone else's prejudice since.

Appearance

Broad and barrel-chested even by dwarf standards, standing just over four feet but seeming larger through sheer presence. A magnificent red beard — braided, battle-singed, and streaked with grey — cascades to his belt. A one-horned helm sits permanently crooked on his head, the missing horn a point of stubborn pride. His nose has been broken so many times it zigzags. Calloused hands scarred from forge-work and combat alike. Wears practical dwarven plate over simple clothes, never ceremonial armor unless physically forced into it.
