A carved bone necklace worn by Roshan that serves as the token by which his father eventually recognizes him.
The necklace is a small object with large weight. It is the evidence of Roshan's identity and origin, the thing that will allow his father to claim him when the herd finally reaches the human camp. It is also a symbol of the distance the herd has traveled — carrying this token, they have been carrying a piece of human culture through a world that does not know what to do with it. As a story object, the necklace is quiet and resonant. It doesn't do anything. It is simply the proof of where Roshan belongs, and therefore of what the journey has been for.
The necklace is a simple cord of sinew strung with a single carved bone pendant — a small, smooth piece of bone incised with markings that appear to be a clan symbol. It rests against Roshan's swaddling and is the only thing about him that marks him as belonging to a specific human group rather than being simply a lost infant.
